BCSP certifications compared: where the STSC fits
Among BCSP's certifications, the STSC sits at the supervisor level beside the STS: 30 training hours, a 100-item, two-hour exam, $120 to apply and $185 for the exam. The CHST and OHST are technician credentials with 200-item, four-hour exams; the ASP and CSP are professional credentials with degree requirements and five- and five-and-a-half-hour exams (BCSP At-A-Glance V.2026.04.01 and Complete Guide, June 2026; as of October 2026).

SH&E = safety, health and environmental. For every credential, at least 0.5 of the points must be ethics. The STSC and STS also accept a degree or a two-year apprenticeship in place of experience. BCSP: fees are “subject to change without advance notice.”
Matching a credential to the job
The deciding question is how much of your job is safety. Supervisors who run the work and carry safety alongside it are who the STSC and STS are written for; STS vs STSC covers the construction-or-not split between them. Once safety is at least 35% of the job, the technician credentials come into reach; STSC vs CHST shows where supervising ends and the construction technician's job begins.
Cost scales with level: $305 to apply and sit the STSC when bought separately ($293 as BCSP's combo), $510 for the ASP or CSP, as of October 2026. For STSC retakes, the Exam Bundle and extensions, go to STSC exam cost.
BCSP's list also includes the CIT, SMP, GSP and TSP, left out of this table. Other organizations issue construction safety credentials too; this table covers BCSP's only.
Choosing among BCSP credentials
Which BCSP certifications are built for construction?
Two name construction outright: the STSC for supervisors and the CHST for construction safety specialists. The STS, OHST, ASP and CSP accept experience from any industry.
Is the CSP open to someone who holds only the STSC?
Not on the STSC alone. BCSP's CSP route asks for a bachelor's degree, four years of SH&E experience and a BCSP-approved credential such as the ASP, GSP, TSP or CIH (BCSP, as of October 2026). Check BCSP's current approved list before planning around any other credential.
