STSC study guide

This STSC study guide follows BCSP's STSC7 blueprint: five domains, from Hazard Identification and Control at 28.5% of the exam down to Leadership and Ethics at 13.2%. Below are the weights, what each domain asks of a construction supervisor in field terms, and every topic sheet on the site.

The STSC blueprint, by weight

The weights are BCSP's percentages of the exam's 100 items, from the STSC7 Examination Blueprint (V.2020.03.27), as of October 2026. BCSP has an STSC Passing Score Activity scheduled for Nov 9–10, 2026, so recheck the blueprint if you test after that; the STSC passing score sheet explains what that activity is.

  • Safety Program Implementation23.9%

What each domain asks of a supervisor

Safety Program Implementation
Running the program on site: job hazard analyses, inspections, incident investigation and the OSHA 300 log, permits, hazard communication, and knowing when a problem has to go up the chain of command.
Hazard Identification and Control
Seeing the hazard and choosing the fix: heights, trenches, confined spaces, electrical work and lockout, cranes and rigging, hot work, struck-by and caught-in, PPE (personal protective equipment). Fixes are ranked by the hierarchy of controls.
Health Hazards and Basic Industrial Hygiene
Exposures that make people sick over a shift or a career: heat and cold stress, noise, ergonomics, silica, lead, welding fumes, and the routes by which a chemical gets into the body.
Emergency Preparedness and Management
What happens when something goes wrong: fire prevention and extinguishers, alarms and drills, severe weather, first aid and bloodborne pathogens, and what an emergency action plan must include.
Leadership and Ethics
Applying the BCSP Code of Ethics when the job pushes back: a schedule that wants to skip a control, a gift from a vendor, a report someone would like softened.

Every topic and mix-up sheet

Each category sheet carries practice cards for its topic. The indented mix-up sheets each take one idea that is easy to confuse with a neighboring rule.

Turning the guide into a schedule

Work in weight order, heaviest domain first, and drill each sheet's cards before moving on. The STSC study plan does that sequencing over 4, 8 or 12 weeks, and the STSC flashcards keep the numbers fresh between sessions.

Once every domain has had a pass, sit the timed mock exam. BCSP's exam has 100 multiple-choice items (how many questions are on the STSC has the source), and the mock's score by domain is the clearest signal of where the next hours should go.

Exam facts, checked against the source

Format, fees, scheduling and retakes, each with the BCSP page it comes from and the date we checked it.

Getting certified

From the 30 hours of training BCSP asks for, through the application, to the five-year recertification cycle.
